Denture Care Tips
Caring for dentures is similar to caring for natural teeth. Here is some advice for proper oral care while wearing dentures.
- Rinse After Eating - Be sure to rinse your removable dentures with water after meals to help keep them clean throughout the day. This also helps prevent bad breath.
- Brush Daily - Brush your dentures daily with a denture brush or soft-bristled toothbrush to remove denture adhesive, food particles, and plaque buildup. Use a non-abrasive soap or denture paste, as regular toothpaste is too abrasive.
- Clean Your Gums - With your dentures out, clean your gumline, cheeks, tongue, and roof of your mouth. This helps eliminate oral bacteria and stray food particles that can cause gum disease.
- Soaking and Cleansing - Remove your dentures before sleep and soak your dentures overnight. You can also use a denture cleansing solution to help aid in overall hygiene.

These are some of the most common questions our dentists receive from denture patients.
Can I sleep in my dentures?
While you can wear your dentures overnight, our dentists recommend removing them before you go to bed. This gives your gums and jawbone a chance to rest after supporting your dentures all day. If you do wear your dentures at night, it is important to take the time to properly clean both your mouth and your restoration before sleep. You should never wear your dentures for more than 24 hours without a proper cleaning.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
While it may take a little time to get used to eating with dentures, once you do, you should be able to eat most foods normally. For traditional dentures, a dab of denture adhesive can help stabilize the restoration and make eating hard or sticky foods easier. Implant-supported denture patients have no restrictions and can confidently eat steak, apples, and more. You should avoid chewing gum frequently, as it can stick to the denture material and cause damage.
How do you know when it's time to reline dentures?
When you notice that your traditional denture is no longer fitting as it should, it may be time to refit the base of your restoration. This is typically done every one to two years. Our dentists can perform a reline to give your dentures a tighter, more stable fit. We do not recommend attempting to reline your dentures with over-the-counter kits. If you suspect you need a reline, rebase, or repair, contact us and we will be glad to help.
