Dentures
How Dentures Work
Dentures are a method of replacing a person's missing teeth. Partial dentures can replace many missing teeth while full dentures help replace an entire dental arch. Both full and partial dentures can be anchored in place thanks to dental implants.
Today's dentures are a wonderful option for patients looking to restore their smiles. Tyler L. Pendergrass, DDS and Eric S. Wilkie, DDS in Amarillo, TX, use premium materials to create dentures that look just like your natural teeth while also restoring your ability to chew and talk clearly.
Different Types of Denture Options
Full Dentures
Traditional full dentures, also known as complete dentures, are designed to replace a full arch of teeth. The restoration simply rests on your gums and can be easily removed for nightly cleaning and to allow your gums to rest. This type of denture is held in place by natural suction and dental adhesive, if needed.
Partial Dentures
If you are missing several teeth in a row, a partial denture is an appropriate dental solution. Partial dentures are removable and typically attached to neighboring teeth with dental clasps for stability. However, our Amarillo, TX, practice also offers Valplast® Flexible Partials that don't require clasps and move naturally with your mouth.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are the preferred dental solution for missing teeth at our Amarillo practice. These are held in place by titanium posts inserted into your jawbone. Dental implants securely support the restoration so it never slips. An added benefit is that the posts act as tooth roots and help maintain the health of your jawbone. Implants can be used to support a single-tooth crown, a dental bridge, or a full-arch denture.

Very friendly staff! Called and asked if they had emergency walk-ins available and I was able to come in that moment. Got there and was greeted with friendly faces. Didn't even finish filling out papers and was called back and that was an amazing experience as well. I was able to get in and out in under an hour. And when I was leaving they all told me to have a great day with smiles on their faces! I will definitely be referring them to any who needs dental care!

Traditional vs. Implant Dentures A Closer Look at the Difference
How Implant-Supported Dentures Affect Your Oral & General Health
While traditional dentures can be a great treatment option, the long-term benefits are not as robust when compared with implant-supported restorations.
Bone Atrophy Risks
Traditional dentures cannot prevent bone loss, one thing that is vital for your continued jaw health. In fact, the constant pressure they apply to gum tissue can actually hasten the loss of bone. Over time, jawbone loss can affect the stability of any remaining teeth as well as your appearance. As your jaw continues to deteriorate, the lower third of your face can change in appearance, making you look older than you are.
Preventing Bone Loss
Implant-supported dentures not only give you a secure smile you will enjoy sharing, but the dental implants themselves preserve the bone in your jaw and maintain a more youthful look. Like natural tooth roots, they stimulate the jaw, encouraging your body to regrow bone and maintain the strength and stability of your facial structure. Implants also ensure your restorations will never embarrass you by slipping or falling out.

How Much Will My Dentures Cost?
The price of your care will depend on the type of dentures you choose. You have several denture options to choose from at Pendergrass and Wilkie Dentistry in Amarillo, TX. We'll work closely with you to find a solution that fits your budget and personal goals.
Traditional Dentures Cost
Traditional removable dentures are typically the most affordable option. Unlike restorations of years past, modern dentistry allows us to craft dentures with a more precise fit so they look and feel like your natural teeth. However, you should expect to periodically have your removable dentures relined and refitted, and eventually replaced.
Implant Dentures Cost
While more expensive, implant-supported restorations help prevent your jaw from deteriorating and making you look older than you are. In addition, with proper care, implants can last a lifetime, but the restoration attached to the posts will need to be periodically replaced. Many patients find the convenience and reliability of implants worth the extra investment.
When Making an Investment
in Your Oral Health...
It's Important to Read the Fine Print
Our team understands that dentures are an important investment for our Amarillo and Texas Panhandle patients. That's why, just as with any investment, we recommend you read the fine print when comparing pricing from different practices. You want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples to avoid disappointment about the final price or quality. When researching affordable dentures, make sure you consider:
What's the Total Price?
Be sure to find out which services are included with your dentures. Is that lower advertised price just to get you in the door, but then it quickly starts to balloon? Does the initial price accurately reflect the overall cost? Will the restoration be made from quality materials so it lasts a long time?
Working With a Team You Can Trust
As local dentists, we value each and every patient. This is our community, and we are committed to doing all we can to ensure we live up to your trust, including giving you the full story about pricing.
Once we are able to provide you with a personalized estimate, we can determine which costs, if any, are covered by your dental insurance. Implants, for example, are typically not covered, but restorations are.
Our Amarillo office accepts a range of insurance plans and will work to maximize your coverage. CareCredit financing can be used to break up the remaining portion into manageable monthly payments so you can enjoy a beautifully restored smile on any budget.

Denture Lifespan How Long Do They Last?
/
Dentures are designed to last anywhere from 7–10 years before they typically need to be replaced. It's important that patients practice good oral hygiene to prolong the life of their dentures.
Denture Care Tips
Caring for dentures is similar to caring for natural teeth. Here is some advice for proper oral care while wearing dentures.
- Rinse After Eating - Be sure to rinse your removable dentures with water after meals to help keep them clean throughout the day. This also helps prevent bad breath.
- Brush Daily - Brush your dentures daily with a denture brush or soft-bristled toothbrush to remove denture adhesive, food particles, and plaque buildup. Use a non-abrasive soap or denture paste, as regular toothpaste is too abrasive.
- Clean Your Gums - With your dentures out, clean your gumline, cheeks, tongue, and roof of your mouth. This helps eliminate oral bacteria and stray food particles that can cause gum disease.
- Soaking and Cleansing - Remove your dentures before sleep and soak your dentures overnight. You can also use a denture cleansing solution to help aid in overall hygiene.

Can I sleep in my dentures?
While you can wear your dentures overnight, our dentists recommend removing them before you go to bed. This gives your gums and jawbone a chance to rest after supporting your dentures all day. If you do wear your dentures at night, it is important to take the time to properly clean both your mouth and your restoration before sleep. You should never wear your dentures for more than 24 hours without a proper cleaning.
Can I eat normally with dentures?
While it may take a little time to get used to eating with dentures, once you do, you should be able to eat most foods normally. For traditional dentures, a dab of denture adhesive can help stabilize the restoration and make eating hard or sticky foods easier. Implant-supported denture patients have no restrictions and can confidently eat steak, apples, and more. You should avoid chewing gum frequently, as it can stick to the denture material and cause damage.
How do you know when it's time to reline dentures?
When you notice that your traditional denture is no longer fitting as it should, it may be time to refit the base of your restoration. This is typically done every one to two years. Our dentists can perform a reline to give your dentures a tighter, more stable fit. We do not recommend attempting to reline your dentures with over-the-counter kits. If you suspect you need a reline, rebase, or repair, contact us and we will be glad to help.
